  • Do MPs help to make a Positive Difference?

At the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce event involving all the Norfolk MPs back in February 2014, Rachel Blackburn, Director of US2U Consulting, raised the issue that it was taking over 3 months for a new taxi driver to get their licence from Norwich City Council, on behalf of her client ABC Taxis Ltd. As ABC Taxis planned to recruit 20 new drivers this year to meet customer demand, this clearly was a concern to them and also to the individuals concerned who are keen to start their new career.

Chloe Smith MP and Simon Wright MP agreed to help to solve the problem. Working with Rachel Blackburn who met with Norwich City Council to profile the process in more detail, it has been a team effort to resolve the issue. Norwich City Council have agreed that the process should take around 5 weeks and currently the experience when hiring the new drivers recently has been that it has been taking around 8 weeks - a significant difference.

US2U Consulting and ABC Taxis have also produced a film to make the recruitment and licencing process easier to understand from the new recruits point of view. This can be seen on the ABC Taxis website at http://www.abctaxisnorwich.co.uk/Recruitment.aspx. Chloe Smith also visited the ABC Taxis team as part of the process.

  • Exploring the Fruits of our Labour Market at The Enterprise Centre

Both Kerwin Blackburn and Lee Casey attended a talk organised by Chadwicks Ltd on Tuesday 18 July at the University of East Anglia's Enterprise Centre, about 'How Millennials are Reshaping our World'.

The talk covered long-term socio-economic trends and their implications for both businesses and investors and the effects of population change on global labour markets. It also highlighted how Millennials, born between 1980 and 2000, have shifting priorities that require businesses to adapt their products and services.

The session provided interesting insights into what businesses need to prioritise in order to increase productivity and keep up in the rapidly growing knowledge economy. The three main avenues stressed upon were the importance of education, constructive technology and urbanisation.

The changing expectations of so called 'Digital Natives' were also discussed, as it is known that Millennials now value interactive and user-friendly digital environments, reflecting the value of having a bespoke US2U Consulting-produced Commercial Video.

  • Inspiring a Generation at Norwich Cathedral

Rachel and Kerwin Blackburn attended the "When I Grow Up" careers exhibition at Norwich Cathedral on Tuesday 15 December, aimed at providing inspirational careers advice to over 500 children from the Harleston schools in Norfolk.

The event featured around 80 organisations from a variety of sectors, and we were pleased to be featured within the "something a little bit different" section!

As part of our display we featured several of our clients to convey the benefits of becoming a Management Consultant, including fresh produce from Worldwide Fruit and G's Fresh, and an ABC Taxis recruitment film.

Unsurprisingly, however, Wayne Rooney's signed, match-worn football boots managed to steal the show, with many of the 7-13 year old crowd taking 'boot selfies' and vowing not to wash their hands again after holding them!

Emma Johnson, the schools' Cluster Coordinator, said "Thank you for bringing so many great activities and goodies for the children and sharing your passion for the jobs you do. The feedback from teachers and pupils has been so positive."

  • John Bird Talks Social Enterprise with Your Own Place CIC

US2U Consulting attended the lively and insightful 'John Bird Talks Social Enterprise' event, hosted by Your Own Place CIC, on Thursday 20 April at St. Giles House Hotel, Norwich.

Norwich-based social enterprise Your Own Place CIC was hosting their annual event for the second time, following 2016's talk from Lemn Sissay MBE.

They invited founder of The Big Issue, Baron John Bird, to share his story that led him to starting the social business, and what advice he has for other change-makers looking to make an impact through business. His overriding piece of advice was to focus on giving those in need a "hand up rather than a handout".

The event also included a screening of the promotional videowhich we are proud to have sponsored and produced for Your Own Place, which has already helped them in raising their profile throughout the region!

Find out more about how an US2U Consulting-produced promotional video can enhance your organisation's image.

  • Unscrambling New Data Protection Laws at Broadland Business Breakfast Forum

Kerwin Blackburn and intern Lee Caseyattended the Broadland Business Breakfast Forum on Wednesday 12 July at Sprowston Manor, where the issues of changing data protection laws and adapting to today's online world were discussed.

The topic of the changing data protection laws explored how our relationships with data are evolving and the considerations that businesses must take ahead of the new General Data Protection Regulation being introduced in May 2018.

Interestingly, although these are EU regulations, it turns out that any business supplying goods and services to EU citizens must adhere to these rules - which may also be indicative of how other EU legislation could continue to apply to the UK following the nation's impending departure from the European Union.

The forum also featured the top tips for adapting to the online world, with key takeaways including the importance of having a responsive website (we launched a responsive version us2uconsulting.comearlier in 2017!) and the need to engage with 'digital natives'.
