And Now for Something Completely Different! Captain Fawcett Visit

During a 25 year consultancy career, US2U Consulting Director, Rachel Blackburn, has visited many business sites across most sectors in locations across the UK and in many locations around the world.

However, she has recently visited the fellow Export Champion business Captain Fawcett, tucked away in a corner of an industrial estate in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England - which is a bit different from other businesses she has encountered.

Founded by Richard Finney in 2010, the business is "an emporium home to a simply delectable range of first class Gentlemen's grooming requisites".

As a successful international entrepreneur, Richard says that he does things differently and hates management speak. The business is set in the Marvellous Barbershop Museum which Richard, with a background in the British film industry, has curated with the eye of a set designer - creating a period tableaux which might serve as a unique photographic and film location.

Indeed the site, which includes a manufacturing facility, is an experience for most of the senses as it smells amazing - it is a challenge to decide where to look first.

"Whilst we have clients that have curated museums and artefacts reflecting their history, it is my first experience of a business operating from their museum comprising of so many interesting objects reflecting the DNA of the brand" said Rachel.

One of these values is Encouraging Diversity; yes, we had this as a value before it became fashionable!

In addition to supporting clients with this part of their business culture, we take opportunities to continue to learn and develop our understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion and what best practice looks like. Clearly, a lot has changed since 2006.

On Saturday 26 August 2023, we took the opportunity to attend the Manchester Pride Parade (US2U Consulting Director Rachel Blackburn is pictured here). The theme this year was "Queerly Beloved", in honour of the 10th anniversary of the marriage equality act in the UK.

We also experienced the weather of all the seasons whilst the parade was taking place, but regardless of the rain it was great to see all the colourful outfits, live performances and strong community spirit.

We are delighted to announce that US2U Consulting has partnered with Cambridge Cleantech, an organisation which supports the growth and innovation of 'clean technology' companies.

Cleantech companies aim to drive sustainability by using environmentally-friendly measures and resources. Cambridge Cleantech achieves this goal by providing a hub for cleantech companies, allowing them to connect with each other and form a network. Members of the organisation vary, ranging from start-ups to global organisations.

Given the rise in sustainability standards, the number of cleantech companies is increasing. At US2U, we are keen to build on our work in the cleantech space, having already worked with clients such as ETA Green Power, Xampla and ABC Taxis, all of which have made significant impact in the green technology sector. Marina Makes Waves at US2U Consulting!

US2U Consulting were pleased to recently welcome recent University of Oxford graduate Marina Popp to the team, who joined us as an intern for some valuble work experience within the Management Consultancy industry. Below are some reflections from Marina following her time with us:

Having spent a week at US2U Consulting, I have learnt a lot about the consultancy world and the opportunities and challenges that arise from the space. I have outlined what I've learnt under five key points below:

1. My work experience has been very insightful about the skills needed to be a successful consultant. These include (but are not limited to!) resilience in the face of setback, flexibility, responsiveness, willpower and energy, both in terms of time and distance.

2. Having written and edited an AI Policy for the business, I am now up-to-date on current regulations on AI, as well as on the benefits and risks associated with its deployment.

3. Handouts commonly used by the business for inspirational sessions have been really useful when it comes to understanding key skills and how to implement them. For example, I have learnt about the effects drastic change may have on someone, and how they can navigate that change in a positive way.

4. Working on certain projects of US2U Consulting with the 'cleantech' sector, such as its new partnership with Cambridge Cleantech, has introduced me to this buzzing, entrepreneurial space.

5. On a personal level, I have learnt to be open when it comes to taking feedback, and always learn from my mistakes. Drafting content for the website means that I have been flexible in changing my approach as appropriate.

We always incorporate key messages into our client projects as appropriate. This may include helping clients create or refresh their company values to drive a positive, inclusive culture or delivering specific sessions to enable managers and staff to stay up to date on relevant legislation and language that can be used or avoided in the workplace so that people feel comfortable.

Congratulations to British Superbike rider, Boniface Engineering-sponsored Ryan Vickers, who clinched his first career podium finish in the British Superbike Championship at Donington Park on Sunday 21st May 2023.

Ryan has been sponsored by Thetford-based Boniface Engineering - a long-standing US2U Consulting client - for a number of years. He finished second in the opening of three races at the Donington Park leg of the Championship, after over 100 races in the competition.

Through Boniface Engineering, US2U Consulting have been following Ryan Vickers' progress for a few years. We even scripted and produced a series of video interviews with Ryan last year, to mark Boniface's 40th anniversary year of trading. Watch these here!
